In February, 2017, many students gave beautiful performances at the SMAC-SDB Winter Graduation Recitals.

To be eligible to perform, students must master an approved piece according to their skill level and make a recording.  It's not easy, but they learn a great deal from the recording process.  For more information, see our Graduation page.

    Congratulations, students!

Last summer SMAC-SDB hosted Masterclasses and a Parent Talk with violinist, Edmund Sprunger, as well as Masterclasses with cellist, Tanya Carey.  Many great ideas were gained by participating students, parents, and teachers.  These are some ideas that were highlights for one Suzuki parent.

    Masterclass
When teaching a new technique/strategy, asking the child to explain it back will ensure whether the child has learned the technique/strategy.

    Parent Talk
There are four stages for developing independence.

    • For the Child
    • With the Child
    • Watching the Child
    • Separating/understanding the child is not a part of us

Independence and ownership of the art form will come with:

    • Structured practice
    • Not reflecting the distress/frustration back to the child when they are frustrated
    • Considering/understanding the child is a different person
    • Knowing when and how much to push the child
    • Parent does not consider/approach going to lessons or practicing as a chore

Congratulations to the piano families who raised $1,297.00 for future piano events in 2017! Thirty-four students raised funds by performing for family and friends at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on November 12th.

Participants were from the studios of Connie Almond, Jim Guerin, Mary Mathews, Francisco Nakahara, Marlene Scherk, & Ronel Wishnuff. Special thanks to the families who donated or purchased our silent auction items, including this beautiful wall hanging.

High bidders went home with some great items and the casual atmosphere made for a fun afternoon of music and common cause. Due to the great success, a masterclass workshop with master teacher Diana Galinda has been scheduled for the weekend of April 22nd-23rd. Registrations will begin sometime in late February. Be sure to mark your calendars and thank you to all our participants and donors!

    Dear Teachers, Students, and Parents,

We kick off the new school year with our annual teacher potluck and social. It was very nice to see all of you who were able to attend. The picnic-in-the-park is our next event and I hope to see as many teachers, students and parents there as possible. For all piano students, we will have keyboards for you to play on, so please come and join us. We will not only play music, lots of games as well. Come and have some fun!

    Musically yours,

    Ronél WishnuffSMAC-SDB President
